Links that matter… SEO ponderings
Links are powerful for search engine optimization (especially google).
- They’re the reason why lensographies are important.
- They’re the reason why I do think having only one profile is preferable to having several
But links aren’t created equal. Some links are more powerful than others.
Powerful links are:
- Links that have been around for a while. The longer the better. (Every link starts out young, obviously, but as it ages it becomes more influential
- Links that are on powerful pages. That is: pages google considers ‘authority’ on a subject.
The second bit can be elaborated even more. What’s a powerful page?
- Age : older pages have more authority
- Links to that page: pages with more links are more powerful, especially if they are links from powerful pages themselves
- The domain: pages get taken more seriously if they are on a domain (www.squidoo.com is a domain) that is powerful. Wikipedia is a domain that is very powerful at present.
You’ll notice that freshness doesn’t really come into it. This is not entirely true: a new link gives a page a small boost for a while. After that, it will help that page a bit as time goes on. long term though: those small boosts add up more than the one time boost did.
It seems this is turning into a series. More tomorrow on what this means for internal squidoo links.

I’ll be reading your notes…I know we have talked of lensographies before…I do not actually know if a lensography is a special page or a regular lens that one creates about oneself.

A lensography is simply a lens created by you, about your lenses. I’ve done most as ordinary lenses, but some on the special squidoo projects. It makes sense for instance, to do a lens about yourself on squidwho – and have it link to all your lenses.
In general though: a lensography is any lens that has as content all your lenses. It makes sense to have your lenses organised by subject. So I’ve got a lensography about my spiritual lenses. When that one became a bit large, I created one with all my lenses about spiritual teachers. I also have a lensography with all my Buddhist lenses: though that lensography also functions as an introduction into Buddhism.
For the lenses that are left I created a a lensography with all my other lenses. But even that one turned out to become a bit long (and I’m just not comfortable with long lenses), so I created a lensography with all my nerdy or digital lenses.
You can however also created lensographies that have nothing to do with you. For instance, in my bid for giant squid, I created a lensography with environmental lenses. That one is just a showcase of great lenses about the environment. I also created a lensography about great squidoo groups.
There are themes of all kinds – for instance I did one lensography about Ultimate religious, spiritual and philosophical questions. It features my own hey monkeybrain lenses devoted to spiritual debate, other lenses about this topic – but it’s also a hey monkeybrain lens on it’s own: with debate on all the topics mentioned.
I hope that makes it clear just what a lensography is
[Now I'm glad I own this blog, because this comment is bound to be mistaken for spam. So I'm off approving it

That was a bit too optimistic I’m afraid, I did have to approve it. Oh well – what can you expect with some 10 links in there. And I don’t think I was even logged in.
