Quiting squidoo groups – seems to help in google
I don’t know for sure if this is the cause, but quiting groups does seem the trigger: many of my lenses suddenly got more traffic over the past 48 hours.
Of course there could be some other reason google suddenly likes my lenses – like the new category pages in which many of my lenses rank highly. That’s good not just for those particular lenses, but also for the rest of my lenses because they are interlinked so well.
But whatever the cause of this sudden increase in traffic – it does seem very clear that quiting groups your lens isn’t featured on is NOT going to hurt your lenses one bit. And it may actually be the difference between 1 visit a day and 10 visits a day.

Hmm, that is interesting. I know I have been a lot more selective recently about which groups I submit my lenses to. There’s quite a few that I joined when I published my first few lenses and when I have gone back, the HQ page obviously has not been updated in a long while.
Another clue is that some avatars for the featured lensmasters have switched to the “this is a picture of a squid because there is no avatar” picture, which makes me think the lensmasters have closed their Squidoo account.
Have also stopped submitting to groups that have huge numbers of lenses but don’t seem to change the ones they feature.

I’ve never seen a need to join a lot of groups with each Lens. I kind of worry about groups that automatically add anyone who joins. I try to keep with active groups.
I think my biggest concern has been making Lenses, not joining groups. I try to get each Lens into at least one group after being published, and wonder if I should try for more.

I avoid the ‘Any Lens Accepted’ type groups – they have absolutely no value what so ever.

The problem isn’t joining groups – it’s quiting them. Quite a lot of work and sometimes squidoo can’t seem to keep up with it.

What I really hate is how Squidoo doesn’t tell you which groups are still pending moderation – quitting them would certainly reduce the size of the groups page.
Maybe something I can add to the next version of my addon…

I have never quit a group — you make it sound like it is not straight forward. I know I have joined too many in some cases and will have to take a second look at which ones I looked at with your criteria in mind.
Related but slightly different, how does lensrolling work…with regard to these considerations. How many is too many? How related should they be? Is there a lens a great lens about lensrolling? I’ll have to look…

I usually check whether lenses have been accepted by just looking at the lens-page. Simple measure. But a notice on the dashboard would be welcome, especially if there would be the added bonus of showing how long the lens that hasn’t been accepted has been waiting.
