Squidoo help lenses as linkbait

Linkbait? Linkbait is material that is put online not to make money, but to get links. Then when the links are there, the page in question will just link to whatever commercial content the owner wants to have rank better.

Ah Katinka, you are so wise! I had not thought of it that way.

It is such a pity though, it is (I am told) such a helpful lens and I even had one new Lensmaster visit and comment that he wished he had read Squid Etiquette BEFORE he posted a comment in the SquidU forum that almost lost him friends before he had made them!!!

However, although I know that this is a lens that is hard to put good relevant links on to get clickouts, I do sometimes wonder if it has been dinged, because the amount of traffic and clickouts are far greater than some of my other lenses that are higher ranked. I guess we never really will work out what counts the most towards lensrank will we :o (

You could just ask for a blessing :)

I don’t think it would be dinged. Why would it, it’s not spammy. But you are so active on squidu that perhaps your other lenses are getting blessed on so regular a basis that the old blessings on that one don’t count. Or something.

katinka has a point, maybe it’s not that your lens has been dinged, more that others might have been blessed. You never know…

However there has been a spate of dinging going on from what I hear, some of it sounding fairly malicious in nature.

I agree, no lens, especially a useful one, is a waste. Whether it’s the links it provides, the reputation it builds, or whatever.

In other businesses I have learned that you have money earning projects/programs and then others that aren’t although they may be necessary or good. The money makers exist in part to support the other good work you do. For instance, a hospital may run a cardiac program that’s useful as well as profitable. They may also run a day program for elderly patients that may COST them money without being profitable. The cardiac program (as well as other profitable programs) will support it. It may not earn a great deal of revenue directly but it does establish a reputation, trust, a following, a useful service, and more.

Maybe the same logic applies here.

    Mulberry: great point.

Tony: by dinging you mean giving one star ratings? That would actually give the lens a lensrank boost! (though obviously a small one).
